Update address.
​File a change of address with the Postal Service, or ask them to hold your mail at the post office in your new city. Notify friends and family of your new address so you can stay in touch.

Prepare appliances.
Drain gas and oil from lawn equipment, gas grills, heaters, etc., and empty and defrost the refrigerator/freezer at least 24 hours before the move.

Pack for travel.
Bring enough clothes and toiletries to cover the days you’ll travel as well as the first days in your new home. Don’t forget to refill prescriptions and bring them with you, too.
